Constipation

To understand constipation, it helps to know how the large intestine works. As food passes through it, the large intestine absorbs water and forms feces. Muscle contractions of the colon push the stool towards the rectum. By the time the stools reach the rectum they have become solid because most of the water has been absorbed.

The hard and dry stools of constipation are created when the large intestine absorbs a lot of water. This is because the intestinal muscle contractions are slow or sluggish, causing the stool to move into the large intestine too slowly.
